Uncle Willie,

It doesn't say what happens when you take the goat first, so that sounds like a good place to start? But if you leave the goat or the wolf behind while taking something else over, what is stopping the goat/wolf from wandering off? Anyway...

Take the goat first. Then go back and get the cabbage. Take the cabbage over, but make sure you bring the goat back with you so the goat doesn't eat the cabbage. Swap the goat for the wolf, take the wolf over to leave with the cabbage. Go back and get the goat.

Ps. It's spelt "Riddle".

As far as the riddles thing, I don't know what your talking about.

I see several answers to this puzzle.

1. Take the boat oar and hit the wolf over the head rendering him unconscious. You can then take the three items, goat, wolf and cabbage over in that order.

2. Report this problem to the local communist party who will deliberate until the goat and wolf are dead and the cabbage has rotted.

3. Report this problem to the National Communist Party who will imprison the farmer for traveling without a permit, confiscating the boat, goat, wolf and cabbage.

4. The farmer could consult his wife who would simply refuse to allow him to travel. (She doesn’t believe the goat and wolf story anyway . . . she thinks he is up to not good with a loose woman in another village!)

5. And finally the Chinese farmer could seek enlightenment, give up all his worldly possessions and enter a monastery. (That would also get him away from his wife!)

Jack I like the way you think, out of the box.

Feed the cabbage to the goat and then drown the wolf in the stream?
