The Science of Fox News: Why Its Viewers are the Most Misinformed. This is a long article with parts from a book written by Chris Mooney’s, The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Deny Science and Reality. It's something that I always thought but it is becoming more clear almost every day. And,I think, it is the reason we can't get anything done, politically, in this country. When you have millions of people who watch Fox every day and believe every word that is said, you have got a real problem in solving our country's real problems. And there is no solutions in sight.

Randy Reynolds, a Canadian, writes a column “Addicting Info.” His recent article called “Understanding The History And Purpose Of FOX News,” appears to take a Canadian point of view and opens:

You’d think a thing like FOX couldn't happen in the United States. Although they’re free to be crazy and free to support the Republican Party, you’d think Americans would be too smart to fall for the made-up outrages, dishonest reporting and relentless appeal to our meaner nature. Unfortunately, many Americans are not as smart as we used to assume: a huge swath of Americans (especially elderly white Southerners) believe FOX is just another news media outlet. They aren't.
What is FOX? Pensitore Review (8-18-09) pulled no punches in answering that question: “ FOX News is indisputably the most popular cable news channel. And yet in 13 years, Fox has never broken a story. That’s okay, because it is not in the news business. It is in the news-shaping business. Its programming is an admixture of right-wing propaganda and fear-porn for feeble-minded paranoiacs, served up by spokesmodels who have no clue what they are reading.”

Why Fox News Viewers Don't Know Shit

This post was lifted from one of my every day reads, News Hounds for the Common Good, who's motto is "We watch Fox so you don't have to."

I have always thought that David Frum was a thoughtful and intelligent pundit for the right. It's not that I agree with what he is saying at times, but he lays out a intelligent position for the "right".

He use to be on Fox news pundit, but after he called Rush Limbaugh out for having way to much power over the Republicans, he was band from the network. This goes hand and hand with a new study that Fox News viewers are less informed than people who don't watch any news, according to a new poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

David Frum, who has been a Republican all his adult life, as he says in a recent New York Magazine article, called “When Did the GOP Lose Touch With Reality?” answers the question by laying much of the blame for that at the feet of Fox “News.”

Extremism and conflict make for bad politics but great TV. Over the past two decades, conservatism has evolved from a political philosophy into a market segment. An industry has grown up to serve that segment—and its stars have become the true thought leaders of the conservative world. The business model of the conservative media is built on two elements: provoking the audience into a fever of indignation (to keep them watching) and fomenting mistrust of all other information sources (so that they never change the channel). As a commercial proposition, this model has worked brilliantly in the Obama era. As journalism, not so much. As a tool of political mobilization, it backfires, by inciting followers to the point at which they force leaders into confrontations where everybody loses, like the summertime showdown over the debt ceiling.

But the thought leaders on talk radio and Fox do more than shape opinion. Backed by their own wing of the book-publishing industry and supported by think tanks that increasingly function as public-relations agencies, conservatives have built a whole alternative knowledge system, with its own facts, its own history, its own laws of economics. Outside this alternative reality, the United States is a country dominated by a strong Christian religiosity. Within it, Christians are a persecuted minority. Outside the system, President Obama—whatever his policy errors—is a figure of imposing intellect and dignity. Within the system, he’s a pitiful nothing, unable to speak without a teleprompter, an affirmative-action ­phony doomed to inevitable defeat. Outside the system, social scientists worry that the U.S. is hardening into one of the most rigid class societies in the Western world, in which the children of the poor have less chance of escape than in France, Germany, or even England. Inside the system, the U.S. remains (to borrow the words of Senator Marco Rubio) “the only place in the world where it doesn't matter who your parents were or where you came from.”

We used to say “You’re entitled to your own opinion, but not to your own facts.” Now we are all entitled to our own facts, and conservative media use this right to immerse their audience in a total environment of pseudo-facts and pretend information

John Stewart On Fair and Balance

I Can't Take It

One of the first things I do in the morning, after making the coffee, is go to the computer and check a on the world. And usually my first stop is News Hounds. Their motto is "We watch Fox so you don't have to". And what they do is pick out all the crazy things that the people on Fox say and do. For me lately the good people at Fox have gotten so crazy that I can even read about them. It's just twenty four/seven craziness and I just can't take it anymore. Some of the examples lately are as follows:

So because of Fox my morning routine is all messed up. How long before the good people of Fox get back to slightly crazy so I can get back to normal

The Far Right and the White House

On Rachel Maddow show Tuesday night she went after Fox News for its role in pushing the Shirley Sherrod story. She also criticized the White House for continuing to fall for Fox's network's stunts. Listen to the her report here.

I am always hearing that the Obama administration should stop trying to appease the far right and just follow it's own agenda. And I never thought about it till this Shirley Sherrod story. But the White House does not want to stand up to the Fox News,the Glen Becks and the Rush Limbaugh's of the world. The right can put something out there, even if it is a lie and the White House will react and not in a good way. A couple of examples are this Black Panther voter intimidation that Fox is pushing. Vin Jones having to resign because of Glen Becks rants and now the Shirley Sherrod thing. Note to White House, stop trying to win over the people who are out to destroy you, do your own thing. You will be better off in the long run and it will most likely help our country move on.

Fox News.......... They Just Don't Get IT

I just can't get enough of John Stewart showing what Fox News is all about. As your pal has been saying for years, they are neither fair nor balanced. They have become what their mantra use to be, bias media. In giving the conservative point of view they have gone way beyond being fair and balanced. They almost never give the other side of a story. Their guest include any person who will rile on about any unsubstantiated rumors and not challenging them, as most of the time they are riling against our president or some liberal cause. John Stewart shows with comedy, how bias, unfair, and the hypocrisy of Fox and in some cases, as Glen Beck show has proven, the craziness of their programing.

Brit Hume the old Fox News number one anchor seem to have lost it while commenting on Tiger Woods marital problems. Hume urging Tiger Woods to accept the "forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith" on Fox's Sunday morning new program. Only on Fox would you hear this kind of proselytizing from there number one news anchor. Imagine Walter Cronkite or Brian Williams saying such a thing. Well you would not hear it from these legitimate new people. Only on Fox could your head guy diss 376 million Buddhist. Another feather in the Fox new cap.

Stuff

Just a couple of things that I am reading and seeing lately. First, yesterday I ran the spin class with my Christmas workout which consisted of riding hard with visions of sugar plums dancing in everyone head. And you know how hard that can be.

I am watching the very interesting story of Sara Jessica Parkers removal of her mole. A quote from her after a women approached her on a beach upset that she had gotten rid of her "signature." . "For about the next 15 minutes I couldn't hear anything because I thought I'd made a terrible mistake. Can they put it back on?" My advise a little crazy glue will do the trick.

The on going craziness of Glen Beck and all the people over at Fox. First the Glen Beck movie "The Christmas Sweater" on opening night, 34 people attended this film in New York and Boston combined. And one of the biggest controversy was Rupert Murdoch's Christmas card that said Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. On the horror of it.

The press will not be satisfied until Tiger Wood is brought into the town square and stoned to death, not with stones, but with the Titlists Grand Z Silver golf balls.

And the rights wing wing nut who are against health care for all, cleaning the environment, paying any taxes, wanting to own any kind of firearm, even a missile launcher just for hunting, and of course make it a law that everyone has to be a
Christian. What the fuck!

Fox Spreading the Lies

I just had to add this today because it is a perfect example of Fox News being fair and balanced. This is what the viewers of Fox get 24/7. This is why the viewers of Fox, in very high numbers, believe every falsehood about the government health care proposal. How can we have a real dialog, about a very important issue, when millions of people are lied too and mislead every day on a so called new channel.

Fox News Helping to Spread the Fear

This is a perfect example of Fox news reporting. Ask a question that makes an accusation that the white house is sending out unsolicited emails. And when he gets a answer or a way to check if it actually had come from the white house, he just keeps on asking the question. Does this reporter realize that someone could send an email and say its from the white house. With so much misinformation floating out there, especially on Fox, it could very well be the answerer to this knucklehead's question.

I Hate Fox

Another unbiased report from the wonderful people at Fox on the election of Al Franken to the Minnesota Senate. Maybe it was because Mr.Franken wrote a couple of popular books about the fair and balanced Fox news me thinks. The people on the clip below are going on and on about Mr. Franken being a comedian and this coming from Glen Beck, former comedian, Steve Doocy, former weather guy, Gretchen Carlson, former beauty queen and Brian Kilmeade former sports reporter. Do you ever wonder why they don't have Mr Franken on their programs. Maybe it is because they don't have the intellectual capacity to understand a word that is more than 3
letters, or hearing the truth. Fair and balanced now that is a real joke.

Fox News Breeding Hate

Fox news, everyday, try to tear down the president. They seem to to look at every thing the president does as negative. There are not too many pundants who are invited in to champion for the presidents side. It's almost everyone on the channel,in some way or another, but the most hatred come from Sean Hannity. An example is when the president gave a speech in Cairo. Hannity pulled a clip out and played it out of context, making it seem that the president has decided to give 9-11 sympathizers a voice on the world stage. Go here for John Stewart making it very clear.

These kinds of out of context reports are not unusually for Hannity. But what is scary is the nut jobs who believe that what ever they say at Fox news is the truth. This brings me to Shepard Smith one of the anchors on Fox. He seems to be the a beacon of truth at Fox. In the clip below it shows what the 24/7 negative spin of our president spawns. And with the killings lately by extremist in the past weeks, they could be fanning the flames of hate.
